Integral approach to sustainable development

As early as 2016, the Green Destinations international organisation declared Slovenia the first green country in the world. We are aware that sustainable development represents the only way to preserve the beauty of our planet for future generations. Sustainable approach is our priority in different development fields, from energy, transport and waste to water resource management, biodiversity and climate change adaptation. Tourism is also developed in way that is friendly to the environment, local communities and visitors. We participate in a number of projects that realise our green vision and set an example to other destinations.

The prestigious global travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller once again named Slovenia one of the top 10 sustainable destinations to visit in 2022. More

What is the key evidence to prove that Slovenia is on the green path?

See some of the projects and concrete steps Slovenia has made towards sustainable growth, all undertaken with a great sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Soft tourism in Slovenian mountain villages

The international network of Mountaineering Villages combines places in the Alps that develop tourism on the basis of their mountaineering tradition, without a major tourist infrastructure and by using a sustainable approach. The network currently consists of almost 30 villages in Austria, Italy, Germany and Slovenia. These villages boasts tranquil mountain environments, compactness, a living mountaineering culture and an abundance of opportunities for environmentally friendly outdoor activities. Mountains and mountaineering have an exceptional value in these regions in terms of cultural identity.

Towards a world producing less waste

The generation of large quantities of waste poses a great challenge for popular tourist destinations. Nine Slovenian municipalities joined the Zero Waste Initiative to address the problems they have with large quantities of waste. With systematic work, the municipalities prevented the generation of about 15,000 tonnes of mixed municipal waste and thus saved more than EUR 3 million. Waste is also being minimised at a number of popular local events. Near Bled, you can visit the first Zero Waste Hotel in the middle of pristine nature.

Mobile and green

Slovenia strives to minimise its carbon footprint. We wish to offer our citizens and visitors more high-quality alternatives to using passenger vehicles. So, when discovering natural and cultural attractions in the Julian Alps and elsewhere, the use of public transport is promoted.

Park and ride

Visitors of some Slovenian towns can leave their steel chariots at the outskirts and rent a bicycle or take a bus to visit tourist attractions and the town centre. The Park and Ride system is one of the green alternatives for visitors coming from distant places by car. Here are some of the car parks offering this service.

Exploring landscapes in the most environmentally friendly and self-propelled way

There are many maintained hiking and cycling trails in Slovenia where visitors can explore the world around them more interactively. Check out some of the long-distance hiking and cycling trails that are particularly worth experiencing.

Across hills and valleys with an e-bike

The Slovenian landscape is extremely diverse. Here, you can find high craggy mountains as well as broad fields and plains, mysterious underground caves and hills overgrown with vineyards. Even the most uneven terrain in Slovenia is accessible to all cycling enthusiasts thanks to the e-bikes which can be hired at many destinations. Find the most magnificent views in an environmentally friendly way.

We take care of our bees

Slovenia has a rich beekeeping tradition that is firmly anchored in the public consciousness. According to the number of beekeepers per capita, we are at the very top in the European Union, and the indigenous Slovenian bee, the Carniolan honey bee, is considered to be one of the most widely spread honey bees in the world. It’s thus not surprising that 20 May was declared by the United Nations World Bee Day at Slovenia’s initiative. But bees aren’t only found in the countryside, they are also present in the urban environment, even on the roof of one of the Ljubljana hotels. Following a Dutch example, a new project involving the greening of bus stop roofs where indigenous honey plants are cultivated, has come to fruition in the capital recently.
