XPS Webinar Banner_1170x300_DRAFT_C

Thermo Scientific Avantage Software is the best-in-class data system integrated in all Thermo Scientific XPS instruments (K-Alpha, Nexsa and ESCALAB Xi+) for precise, accurate, and reliable instrument control, data acquisition, data processing, and reporting. Whether you are working in a dedicated research lab or a multi-user environment, you can rely on the flexibility, feature-set, and intuitive operation of Avantage Software to enable you to obtain the maximum information from your samples, no matter your level of expertise.

This webinar is the first in a two-part series on Avantage Software. It is designed to offer training to current users of Avantage and act as an introduction to those unfamiliar with it.

Who should attend?

  • Scientists interested in the surface chemistry of materials,
  • Researchers and engineers using surface analysis,
  • Current Avantage users.

By watching the webinar, you’ll learn how to:

  • Perform a basic XPS analysis. The usual workflow to understand a material’s surface.
  • Understand wide scan survey spectra to understand the elements present.
  • Process high resolution scans to determine chemical composition, including peak deconvolution.

Speaker biographies

PaulMack-300x200

Paul Mack
Senior Applications Scientist for XPS
Thermo Fisher Scientific

Paul joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2001 as an applications scientist, with focus on Auger spectroscopy. Soon after joining he became responsible for developing data processing tools for interpreting angle resolved XPS spectra and he also created an algorithm for automatic analysis of XPS survey spectra. More recently Paul became Senior Applications Scientist for XPS and works in a team which helps our XPS users make the most of their surface analysis tools for materials characterisation.

Before joining Thermo Fisher Scientific, Paul received a Master of Chemistry (MChem) undergraduate degree from the University of Southampton, where he also later studied rotational/vibrational spectroscopy and quantum mechanics for his PhD.

RobinSim-300x300

Robin Simpson
Applications Scientist for XPS
Thermo Fisher Scientific

Since joining the Applications team in 2017, Robin has worked to help our XPS users make the most of their surface analysis tools for materials characterisation. In this role he has also taken the lead in producing demonstration and training video content for our customers to make use of as reference tools so they can get the most out of their XPS instruments.

Prior to joining the team Robin had already worked closely with the applications scientists for over 4 years. This is while working on his engineering doctorate at the University of Surrey, where he also received a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Advanced Materials. Robin’s EngD Thesis was based on investigating the benefits of the Thermo Fisher Scientific MAGCIS Ar cluster ion source in XPS depth profiling of various sample types.
